It was “Dig for a Cure” night as the A&M Consolidated volleyball team faced off against the Rudder Lady Rangers. The “Dig for a Cure” initiative was set up to raise awareness as well as money for women affected by breast cancer. It was truly a heartwarming scene as breast cancer survivors from the crowd were applauded as they made their way down to the court to receive gifts and take pictures with the Lady Tigers. There were also numerous fundraisers in effect to support breast cancer support and prevention organizations.

As the attention shifted from the festivities to the game, the Tigers quickly gained control over the first set. They jumped out to a big lead early riding a strong serving and efficient setting performance by senior Sydney Mccorkle and ended up taking the first set by a convincing 25-10.

The second set was more promising for Rudder as their scrappy defensive play kept it tight through the beginning. Gracie Menchaca, the Lady Rangers’ junior libero, was an embodiment of this scrappy mentality. She was on the floor seemingly every play and this effort led to her finishing with 25 digs and helped set the tone for the rest of her team. However, the Lady Tigers’ strong offense proved to be too much as they won the set 25-14. The third set was marked by the solid hitting junior Emma Pahl who had one of her best offensive games this season with a team-high 10 kills. She was responsible for a large number of the Lady Tigers’ points as they went on to win the third set 25-12 and complete the sweep.

This game puts Consol at a solid 8-2 in district play and moves Rudder down to a 3-7. Both teams will look to build off of this game and finish strong in district play.
