The Lady Tigers Finish Strong at Home

October 26, 2019

For their last home game of the season, the A&M Consolidated Lady Tigers took on the Mustangs from Magnolia West. As the first set began, anyone in the stands could see that this was bound to be a hard-fought game from both sides of the court. Consol maintained the lead throughout most of the set however, Magnolia West stayed on their heels. It was outside hitter Alyssa May of Magnolia West that gave the Lady Tigers the most trouble during set one.

Consol was dominant from start to finish as they went on to win the first set 25 to 19. The second set began the same as the first. The defining point of the set came in the latter part when Magnolia West tied the game at 20-20. The Mustangs were on a roll which created a make-or-break situation for the Tigers. From the looks of it, Magnolia West seemed to own the set. However, it was a kill by Ava Derbes out of the middle that would put the momentum in the hands of Consol. The Tigers fought till the end as they took set two 26 to 24.

After a tough set two loss, the Mustangs came back with a vengeance. Magnolia West took an early 7-0 lead and it did not stop there. The Tigers suffered from a few costly mistakes that would help the Mustangs extend their lead 16 to 6. With all of Consol’s efforts, they were unable to bounce back. Magnolia West took set three 25 to 15.  The Mustangs seemed determined to start set four like they did the third, but the Tigers did not want this game to go into a fifth set. Magnolia West went on a run and created a 17-13 lead. Once again, momentum was key for the Tigers as senior Lauryn Callis was able to tie the game at 20-20. The Tigers closed out the match by winning the fourth set 25-22.

Sophomore Ava Derbes lead the Tigers with 15 kills and 26 assists. Followed by senior Sutton Springer with 13 kills and Sydney McCorkle with 23 assists. Ava Derbes and Lauryn Callis both tied with four blocks on the night. With this win, the Tigers maintain their 2nd place standing in the district and confirm their playoff spot. A&M Consolidated will travel to Magnolia for their final district game on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 pm.
