Last Friday night, the College Station Cougars took on the John Tyler Lions of Tyler, Texas in their first-round matchup of the 2019 5A Division 1 Football State Championship Playoffs. The Cougars entered the playoff picture after a resilient comeback win against Magnolia West finishing the season with a 7-2 overall record and ending up with a 2nd place district finish.

With temperatures in the 50s and dry field conditions, the Cougars looked to capitalize
on their momentum from the previous week and pull out a win. With hundreds of fans on both sides in attendance, the Cougars came out with a lot of energy and got off to a great and much needed start. The defense forced and recovered a fumble to set up the offense, and running back Roderick Brown, for a nice 11-yard touchdown run to start the scoring for the Cougars. Kolbe Chasion had an electric 57-yard run on 1st-and-10 late in the 1st quarter to set the team up for their second touchdown.

The 2nd quarter began with a score of 14-0. After a defensive stop in the 2nd quarter, the Lions turned the ball over on downs and gave the ball back to the Cougars with good field position. The Cougars then proceeded to stick with the hot hand, by again handing the ball off to Cashion who took one in from 41 yards out to put the Cougars up 21. Right before halftime, Roderick Brown reminded the whole crowd just how dynamic both backs on this College Station team can be, by putting 6 on the board, giving College Station a 27-0 lead after a failed 2-point conversion going into half time. The 3rd quarter saw the Lions get their first touchdown of the game and another score from Cashion going almost untouched from about 15 yards out to bring the total score to 34-7.

The 4th quarter got things up to a more competitive show. John Tyler managed to go on a little run by scoring two more unanswered touchdowns, allowing them to get within two scores of the lead and making the score 34-21. College Station then got the ball and after driving it to about mid field they were faced with a 4th and 3. Quarterback Jeff Hutt threw a bullet to receiver Traylen Suel on a play action pass to convert, which ended up setting up the likely player of the game, Kolbe Cashion, for a 29- yard run to squash the hopes of the Lions and send them back to Tyler. The game ended with the College Station Cougars topping John Tyler Lions 40-21. The dynamic one-two punch of Cashion and Brown at running back combined for 308 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns.

The Cougars move on to the next round after a dominant first round performance but now have huge test ahead of them, facing the 1st ranked team in the state and the 10th ranked team in the nation, according to Max Preps. The Cougars will face the Lonestar Rangers (Frisco, TX) in the second round of the state playoffs this Friday, November 22nd at 7:30pm at Waco ISD Stadium in Waco, Texas.
